  1. What a loss, what a tragedy for the businesspeople and everyone who loves Maquoketa! My thoughts are with you all today as Maquoketa battles this fire.

  2. What a devastating thing for the town of Maquoketa and all its residents. May god be with all those firefighters today and keep them all safe from harm. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the business owners and towns people.

  3. My heart goes out to all of you either fire people or business people. Coming from Preston I know a lot of you. The pictures showed fire people did a very good job inspite of the conditions. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.

  4. How devastating this disaster for downtown! I have a special interest in buildings involved as my father, Dr, Risser, first office in Maquoketa was on 2nd floor of building which housed the Hallmark store.

  5. I just got a call from LasVegas to tell me that Maquoketa was burning. I quickly called Branson< Missour and Council Bluffs to tell 2 class of ‘49 grads from MHS. My Dad owned The Jackson Sentinel and Maquoketa is always in my heart. I am so sorry for the losses and am very impressed with how all of the communities helped. Somethings never change. Good memories . This is from Sacramento, CA

  6. How devasatating this must be. I am from Maquoketa as well my familt still lives there. I got a call from my mother Doris Johnson who lives 1 block behind the fires. When she told me this I wanted to cry> Historical buildings are gone I know Bill Mohler has been there forever tho I have never met him. I went to school in Maquoketa. The old Maquoketa will surely be missed but we and all Maquoketan’s will welcome the new downtown even more. Bless all those who helped with the fire.

  7. This post is very hot, it is high ranked at our site (daily weblog, weblog post ranking site). See http://indirect6.blogspot.com/ for more information

  8. I grew up in Maquoketa and my mother still lives on the farm where I grew up. One of the buildings housed the Penney’s where my mother worked for awhile. This will certainly change the face of the heart of Main Street. Dr Risser was our family doctor and actually came to our farm when my sister and I got strep throat real bad. I think he also delivered my brother and youngest sister. My favorite memories of that part of Main Street was when we had “Ridulous Days” and every store had great sales and their wares in front of the store. It was a festive, fun time.
This will be a memorable way for the Fire Dept to move into their new building & see their value to the community.

  9. I haven’t lived in Maquoketa for many years, and wasn’t even born there, but my family dates there from the 1870s and I grew up there. I’ve been reading every story that comes through my Google Maquoketa news alert, and there have been many. More than once this weekend I’ve been in tears — sadness to see those old buildings, which my great grandparents saw go up, which have so many memories, so many stories. But also tears of pride at how people came together — not only from town but from so far to help. Thank God there were no injuries or worse, other than to those dear buildings and the businesses they currently had sheltered.. people may say they’re just buildings, but they are so much a part of all of us.

  10. My prayers go out to the fireman, business owners, and people of Maquoketa. I have been away for 4 years and spent alot of time in downtown. The business’s will surely be missed. Again my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Maquoketa.
